Video Surveillance or CCTV (closed circuit television) represents the largest segment of security technology.

Video cameras are used to observe an area, connected to a recording device or IP Network and monitored in a control room. Video surveillance technologies are used for far more than their roots in crime detection, with video analytics solutions able to serve a variety of applications such as traffic and crowd control management, heatmapping, footfall analysis and social distancing or face mask detection. For more sophisticated hardware, much of these analytics is now taking place on the ‘edge’ of the device – meaning on the camera itself – which reduces bandwidth requirements for storage purposes and enables much faster processing.

Popular manufacturers include Hikvision, Sony, Panasonic, Axis Communications, IDIS, Pelco, Hanwha TechwinZK Teco, Dahua, and Tyco. Cameras can range from fixed PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) or bullet cameras, to body-worn devices or more specific thermal imaging applications.

Increasingly, video surveillance devices are being integrated into other physical security and building management platforms to provide more intelligent data for security and facilities managers. There is also a growth in video being stored or managed on cloud-based applications rather than on-premise solutions. Referred to as VSaaS (Video Surveillance as a Service), providers commonly charge monthly recurring costs to maintain, store and secure an organisation’s video surveillance footage.
