Concerned with the reports that many CCTV cameras were not functioning during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assi Ghat in Varanasi on Saturday, the home ministry has directed the Intelligence Bureau to probe the alleged security lapse.
“In case the surveillance cameras were not working, it is a major lapse on part of the local administration as the security of none other than the Prime Minister was involved. Responsibility has to be fixed for the same,” a senior home ministry official said. (Source: TOI)
The official said that the home ministry will also call for a factual report from the Uttar Pradesh government on how the surveillance systems installed at the Ghat were not tested ahead of Modi’s visit.
According to some TV reports, several security cameras at the venue and even some monitors in the control room were not functioning while Modi was at Assi Ghat cleaning silt along the Ganga banks as part of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign.
Modi reached Assi Ghat at 8.40am, followed by prayers. He then took up a spade to begin the Ganga clean-up drive as part of his ‘Clean India’ campaign. Modi also nominated nine persons, including chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, to carry forward the cleanliness drive.
